If you're selling your vehicle or just want to keep your cherished plate for future use, you can retain it on a certificate through the DVLA.

The Retention Process

Retention removes the plate from your vehicle and places it on a V778 certificate, valid for 10 years and renewable.

  • Apply online through the DVLA or via post.
  • The vehicle must be taxed or declared SORN.
  • There’s a £80 fee payable to the DVLA.
  • Your V778 certificate arrives within 2–3 weeks.

Keeping it Safe

Always keep your V778 safe — it’s your legal proof of ownership. You’ll need it when assigning the plate to a new vehicle.

  • Store the certificate securely and renew before expiry.
  • Details on the certificate must match the vehicle's V5C.
  • Never share your V778 with third parties unless trusted.
