All number plates in the UK must comply with DVLA rules to be road-legal. Failure to comply can result in fines or MOT failure.

Legal Requirements

Your number plate must follow strict formatting rules including font, spacing, and reflective materials.

  • Only standard Charles Wright font is allowed.
  • Black characters on a white front plate and yellow rear plate.
  • No screws, bolts, or symbols that alter appearance.
  • Plates must include the British Standard (BS AU 145e) mark.

MOT and Enforcement

Non-compliant plates can lead to failed MOTs, police fines, and points on your licence.

  • Ensure plates are clean, undamaged, and correctly spaced.
  • Illegal fonts or images can invalidate the registration.
  • Fix any non-compliant plates before vehicle inspection.
