Current Number Plates
Curious about how UK number plates work today? The current registration format — first introduced in 2001 — is the most widely recognised and used style on UK roads. At PlusPlates, we’re here to help you understand exactly what it means and how to find your ideal modern private plate.
What Are Current Number Plates?
Current-style number plates, also known as new-style plates, follow a fixed format introduced in September 2001. These registrations are made up of:
- Two letters – The local memory tag, identifying the region and DVLA office
- Two numbers – Indicate the age of the vehicle (updated every March and September)
- Three random letters – Chosen for uniqueness
Examples include:
AB22 CDE
(Registered between March–August 2022)XY73 HJK
(Registered from September 2023)
How Does the Number Indicate Age?
Each March and September, the number changes:
- March plates: Use the last two digits of the year (e.g.
24
= March 2024) - September plates: Add 50 to the March number (e.g.
74
= September 2024)
This simple system helps buyers and sellers instantly recognise a vehicle’s age. For example, a plate with 23
was registered in Spring 2023, while one with 73
appeared in Autumn 2023.
Personalised Current Plates
At PlusPlates, we offer a wide selection of current-style registrations that can be personalised to reflect names, initials, dates or even entire phrases — as long as they follow DVLA rules.
Why choose a current-style private plate?
- They’re modern and instantly recognisable
- Often more affordable than older dateless or prefix plates
- Available in huge volumes — increasing choice
- Can still look meaningful, clever, or personalised
Can I Put a Current Plate on My Car?
Yes — provided the age code on the plate doesn’t make the car appear newer than it actually is. For example, you cannot put a 24
plate on a car registered in 2020. However, you can assign an older plate or one from the same year.
All PlusPlates registrations are checked for DVLA compliance, and our team will guide you through the transfer process to ensure it’s smooth and fully legal.
